‘Gratitude’ – Being Grateful in April

There are few feelings more amazing than being full of gratitude and appreciation for all that life has to offer. However, it is not always easy to maintain gratitude when life throws us some challenges.

That being said, there’s a few methods which inspire me back into a state of acceptance for what is and an appreciation for the things I can not change.

BREATHE
In those moments when I am caught in negative thought, as soon as I focus on my breathing, I regain my balance and strength of mind.  Within that strength and awareness, I can then choose to feel positive about the moment or challenge in front of me. The more oxygen we inhale, the clearer our thoughts become.   The easier it is to think, the easier it is to practice non-attachment to any negative ideas we may have from time to time.

NOURISH
My body and mind feels more grounded and stable when I make nourishing food choices.  I know that toxic food causes a toxic mind.  When I am feeling like I need a boost, I make the conscious decision to reach for something that will nurture my body – such as a bowl of fresh fruit.  The more we empower our mind and body with clean fuel, the easier it is to be in alignment with our thoughts, and thankful.

FLOW
Our bodies are directly linked to our state of mind.  If I am feeling stiff and rigid in my back or shoulders, I always feel a stiffness in my thoughts.  When this happens I know I must move my joints, and stretch my spine.  After only a few minutes of practicing body awareness, I already begin to notice that my racing thoughts slow, and I find it easier to breath and think again.  When I want to get out of my head and into the now, I grab my yoga mat and start to feel grateful for the ability to just move.

BE
Finally, my most favourite gratitude practice is to simply be present in the moment, whatever that moment that may be.  It doesn’t necessarily have to be in yoga class.  I find it helpful to jump into self awareness any time of day, any place.  No matter where I am, or what I was in the middle of doing, when I focus on the now, I always find a special place full of great glorious gratitude.  In those moments, life is always beautiful.
