Short Term Goal Into A Longtime Love ~ Meet Rhys

Building a connection between like-minded individuals is something we’re passionate about at our yoga studio. “Kula” means community in the ancient and sacred language of Sanskrit. Not only do we provide locals from Hawthorn and Camberwell yoga classes, but we also provide them with a yoga studio where people can connect, share and grow. Our students come from all around the Boroondara area to sweat, play, learn and reach their health and fitness goals. Every day at Kula we come across individuals who have inspired us and continue to help shape our community; we wanted to share their stories with you.

Name: Rhys

Kula: Favourite style of yoga at Kula?

Rhys: Power, particularly the Saturday Power Plus class. I find it is a challenging but fun environment to try new postures and push myself.

Kula: Why do you practice yoga?

R: I originally started yoga whilst rehabbing a hip injury. I really only intended it to be a short-term thing, but I have become hooked after noticing big improvements both in my body and in my day-to-day life. I work full-time whilst studying a Master’s degree, so my life is fairly hectic. Yoga helps ground me and increases my clarity & focus.

Kula: What do you love about Kula?

R: I really love the simple, fresh aesthetics of the studio. It is such a bright and vibrant space, I always leave feeling energised. I also love the variety of classes. No two classes are the same and every day is a new challenge.

Kula: Is yoga your main form of exercise or do you participate in other sports, fitness or activities?

R: At the minute it is, yes. I also try to do some form of cardio a few times a week and play basketball too.

Kula: What is the main health goal you are focusing on at the moment?

R: Firstly, just getting my body right and being injury free. Working on alignment, strength and weight loss form a big part of this and I will continue to work on these.

Kula: Apart from Kula, where are your favourite hangouts in the Hawthorn, Camberwell or Boroondara area?

R: I only recently moved to Hawthorn after a couple of years abroad, so it has been awesome exploring some great local spots over summer. Porgie & Mr. Jones is my local for a caffeine fix. Axil, Lights in the Attic and Sardi are a few of my favourite brunch spots, Nevermind for a glass of red and the Lido Rooftop and Jazz Room have been good fun at night!

Kula: Why did you choose to take part in the 21 Day Challenge last month?

R: Yoga has been something new to me in 2018, so the challenge was well timed. I mainly wanted to use this period to break a few bad habits (Snooze button!) and replace them with new, positive ones.

Kula: Tell us about your experience with the Challenge.

R: I feel the Challenge was a success for me and found it a very rewarding experience.  The biggest thing for me was it helped me get into a routine and I have been able to build upon these habits in the past few weeks. Thanks to the Challenge I can finally now say I am a ‘Morning person’! In the past I have overcommitted to lofty goals but the 21 days was manageable, while being long enough to see positive change.

Kula: What do you love most about the Kula Tribe?

R: I think for me, it is the people that really make this place great. I probably had the naïve view that yoga was going to be boring, repetitive ‘stretching’. All the teachers are great at getting the class engaged and every class is a new challenge.
