Over the weekend at our winter retreat in Hepburn Springs—and again in classes this week—I’ve been talking a lot about how winter is the season to slow down, reflect, and conserve energy.
But if life’s been feeling a little overwhelming lately…
you might be approaching winter with summer energy.
I’ve been sharing this with our community—because when we try to push through winter with the same pace, output, and expectations as summer, we end up burnt out, frustrated, or just plain exhausted.
I know that feeling too.
That sense of being out of sync. Of trying to push through with yang energy—go, go, go—when what your body and brain might actually need… is rest.
On the mat, what might that look like?
-
Choosing cat-cow instead of every optional vinyasa
-
Staying in child’s pose longer than usual
-
Embracing slower, more nurturing practices like Yin Yoga or Slow Flow
Off the mat?
-
Saying no to extra social commitments
-
Getting to bed earlier
-
Taking a quiet moment outside, breathing deeply in nature
-
Making time for meditation, breathwork, and stillness
What do you need to get back into balance?
Because this season calls for softness. For nourishment. For tuning in and recalibrating—not pushing and forcing.
And I get it. Life doesn’t slow down just because the season says it should. Between work, family, and everything else on your plate, rest can feel like a luxury.
That’s why your yoga practice is essential right now.
That hour on the mat? That’s your time.
Your chance to reconnect with your body, your emotions, your energy.
It’s the space you carve out to listen in and realign.
And when you do? What you cultivate on the mat flows into the rest of your life.
-
Work might not feel so overwhelming
-
You may respond to stress with more grace
-
You might even feel… lighter
This week, one of our yogis, Sophie, shared this reflection after class:
“Recognising that although I think I’m slowing down because I’m ‘aware’ of it doesn’t actually mean I’m slowing down. It’s time to sync more with the season and find more spaciousness rather than continuing with the summer and spring energy I seem to be addicted to.”
Sophie, thank you for sharing. I’m so glad it resonated—and that you’re taking it off the mat and into your life.
If this is striking a chord with you too, I encourage you to explore how you can align more with the energy of winter—to go with the season, not against it.
With love and warmth,
Kacey x
