The world is finally recognising what yogis have known for centuries, that yoga provides a path to peace & calm.
Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work, it means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.
With mental health being a big focus in today’s society, the medical profession is looking for new alternative and holistic ways to approach mental health conditions. What used to be seen to affect the few, we now realise is affecting the many, on varying levels.
Most people have been touched in some way, whether personally or those close to them, with conditions related to stress, anxiety & depression. With current events and in today’s fast paced, tech-driven society, the need to manage mental health is becoming more prevalent. As practicing yogis we know the effect that yoga has on the way we feel physically, mentally and emotionally. The rest of the world is now waking up and adding yoga to their wellbeing toolkit.
When you own your breath, nobody can steal your peace.
As the scope of yoga is becoming more recognised, in that it is far more than just a physical practice, the benefits of yoga for mental health is also becoming more realised. Studies show that Yoga, it’s link to mindfulness, and meditation are proving valuable tools in dealing with day to day stress. Conversely, previously taboo subjects like depression and anxiety are now more in the open and people are feeling less trapped by lack of understanding and fear of judgement.
On the mat
With a regular practice of yoga and meditation, we begin to feel more in control of our lives and less driven by our reactions to situations. The practice of yoga can take us out of our heads and into our bodies, thus giving us more awareness of how we are feeling and where we are holding tension. Simply bringing our awareness to pain points, be they physical or mental, we begin to acknowledge and open the pathway to change.
Mindfulness meditation and breathing, equally powerful tools for our mental health, can actually change the structure of the brain, improving the way we think and behave. The more we use these tools on the mat, the more likely we are to tap into them off the mat. Thus our practice, and its benefits, filters into life.
Off the mat
As we face the many challenges that 2020 has thrown at us already, with an uncertain future, even the most composed of us can become undone. Yoga gives us a way to remain grounded, calm, at peace and in control.
It is most certainly a challenge to avoid getting swept up in the chaos that surrounds us. This includes not falling down the rabbit hole of someone else’s negative mindset and influence.
‘Calm’ is your power.
How are you going to explore calm as your power this week? Perhaps set yourself up with a positive affirmation or mantra. An example is ‘I experience a sense of peace, calm and love with every breath I take’.
Explore and create your own.
We look forward to seeing you online this week where our teachers will weave our theme of ‘calm is my power’ into their classes and teachings.
