You see them weekly in studio. They guide you through your practice & continually inspire you on the mat. But how well do you really KNOW your Kula teachers :)
If you’re new to Kula you may not know Emily Thomas as she just returned from maternity leave, but she’s a long term and much loved member of the Kula team! Her classes are warm, friendly, inspiring and fun. Here’s a sneak peek at Emily off the mat…
My first experience of yoga was…
At acting school 12 years ago. Our teacher was the owner of a reputed Ashtanga (more traditional) yoga school, and being young we all found his tiny shorts and monotone voice to be the source of much amusement. Even though I wasn’t naturally good at it at first and it was extremely humbling, I was hooked on these sessions. On a purely physical level, it seemed as much an art and masterclass in technique as it was ‘exercise’.
My favourite yoga poses are…
Low flying arm balances like crow, flying pigeon and eight angle pose… there is something precarious about them that just makes me feel so alive!
When I’m not on the mat, I’m…
Either with my little boy Leo, or working my other job as an actor in theatre, film and voice over. Theatre, especially Shakespeare, is where most of my experience lies.
What really lights me up is…
Interacting with people. In that sense I am a true extrovert. I love my students. I think both of my jobs at their core are about trying to understand others and connection.
One thing the Kula community doesn’t know about me is…
I love post-apocalyptic literature and horror, especially Zombie and Vampire novels. I just finished ‘The Passage’ trilogy by Justin Cronin – and highly recommend it!
I’m listening to..
The Chernobyl Podcast as I am a history nerd, and I found the HBO series riveting and beautifully made.
My fav local hangout other than Kula is….
Lido Cinemas and Rivoli Cinemas. There is something so wonderfully escapist about movies.
My favourite quote is…
“Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” ~ Dalai Lama
