Building a connection between like-minded individuals is something we’re passionate about at our yoga studios. “Kula” means community in the ancient and sacred language of Sanskrit. Not only do we provide yoga classes for locals from the Hawthorn and Hampton areas, we also offer them with a community space where people can connect, share and grow. Along with our students, our teachers are the backbone of our community. They come from a range of areas, backgrounds and experiences, each keen to sweat, play, learn and help you reach your health and fitness goals.

I love the space that’s been created in Hampton. The minute I walk through the door I feel at peace.

1. When was your first yoga class and why did you start practicing?

My first yoga class I was so self conscious and very aware of all the heavy breathing around me and felt TOTALLY out of my depth and uncomfortable! It was 7 years until I tried another yoga class again!!!! ?I was going to the gym regularly doing a lot of high intensity workouts and a friend suggested we do a yoga class together. I loved it! And ABSOLUTELY loved the opportunity to lie still for 10 minutes at the end. I had young children by this time and the yoga class allowed me to find some mental peace and slowly I began the crave it every week. Then I started practicing yoga at home… then I bought a mat and that was the moment I knew I was hooked!

2. What other sports, fitness or activities to you enjoy outside of the yoga studio?

I love walking especially with my dog at the beach. I also enjoy Stand up paddle boarding and I love going surfing with my husband and kids.

3. What do you love about teaching at Kula Yoga Hawthorn/Hampton?

I love the space that’s been created in Hampton. The minute I walk through the door I feel at peace. I’m also enjoying watching the community continue to grow!

4. Tell us about the styles of yoga that you love to teach and practice most.

I’m an inversion junkie and love the feeling of being upside down! So I do love to add inversions where possible. However my teaching style is varied from dynamic vinyasa flows to yin/myofascial release based classes. I enjoy focusing on pranayama and the spiritual element of yoga.

5. What is your favourite yoga pose?

My favourite yoga pose would have to be SAVASANA!! Ha!! I also do love a forearm balance (Pincha Mayurasana) or headstand (sirsasana). Getting upside down changes the blood flow and calms the nervous system and I always feel better afterwards. Get upside down ~ change your perspective.

6. What is one thing your yoga students don’t know about you?

I was born in Holland (The Netherlands) and immigrated to Australia (Perth) when I was 5.

7. When you’re not in the studio, where are your favourite hangouts in Boroondara or Bayside
area?

Usually by the bay!! ? I love to be out in nature and the feeling of peace and healing being near or in the water. ? ?
