After my last email about men in yoga, I received some truly heartwarming messages from the guys in our Kula community—both in person and over email—letting me know they feel welcomed and included.
It was such a lovely reminder of what Kula is all about. So to all of you who reached out—thank you. I’m so grateful for this community.
And those after-class chats? Always my favourite.
Earlier this week, a little group of us got talking about that email, and the conversation turned to something really interesting—it’s not just men who sometimes feel intimidated by yoga.
One of our long-time yogis shared that some of her friends, women moving into their golden years, worry they’re too old, not flexible enough, or not strong enough to start yoga.
Sound familiar to anyone else out there?
It got me thinking… much like gender, age can also feel like a barrier to stepping onto the mat.
Which is wild when you consider just how beneficial yoga is for longevity. We all want to move freely, feel stable, avoid falls, and maintain our energy as we age.
And beyond that—yoga helps keep our minds sharp. Did you know inversions (yes, even gentle, restorative ones—no handstands required!) are incredible for brain health?
But here’s the thing: you don’t need to already be strong or flexible to start yoga. In fact, that’s exactly why you should start.
And the best part? Yoga isn’t about doing the fanciest shape in the room. It’s about listening to your body and moving in a way that feels good for you.
I love looking around our Hawthorn and Hampton studios and seeing everyone honouring their needs—choosing variations that serve them in that moment, rather than forcing themselves into something just because they can. That’s where the real power is.
I believe in this so much that one of my ‘pandemic projects’ (because I clearly needed more on my plate) was writing The Supple Senior! I wanted to create a resource to support people like my mum and mother-in-law—who, like so many, wanted to keep moving well as they aged.
(And if you’ve seen The Supple Senior—yes! That’s the wonderful Guelda on the cover and inside, one of our much-loved Hawthorn yogis!)
So if you’re in your golden years (or know someone who is), we’d love to welcome you to class—whether in-studio or online. Our yoga classes in Hawthorn and Hampton are inclusive, supportive, and designed to meet you where you’re at.
Simply get in touch here and we’ll share a promo code with you to receive your first class for free.
See you soon,
Kacey x
P.S. Want to check out The Supple Senior? You can grab a copy at both Kula studios, or order it online here
