Finding a yoga studio (or a gym that offers yoga classes) in the Camberwell or Hawthorn area isn’t hard. But choosing the right style of yoga to fit your health and fitness goals means sorting through all the options. We’re the largest studio in the area, offering seven different types of yoga classes! We’ve created a guide to outline the different yoga classes we offer to help you understand what each class entails.
Who is it for?
Yin yoga is great for anyone feeling restricted, tight or tense in his or her body- desk workers, athletes, weight lifters, fitness enthusiasts, busy mums, gym-goers, students, you name it! By nature the practice of Yin is slow, internal, calm and restorative. A more chilled out style of yoga that still requires presence and awareness. This style of yoga is great for those coming back to yoga after a long time away, or anyone who wants more mobility and circulation. Yin yoga is a great compliment to an active and physical lifestyle.
What should I bring?
Bring a mat or hire one at the studio. Though you won’t sweat in Yin, you may like to bring a small towel to pad sensitive joints as we hold poses for 2-5 minutes. Wear light clothing that you can move feely in and bring extra layers in case you get cold.
What to expect?
Yin yoga is held in a room temperature space. Poses are mostly seated, not strenuous, and held for 2-5 minutes in order to target connective tissue. While stretching is key, students are encouraged to draw awareness to areas of sensation and aim to maintain that sensation (only about 60% of full stretching capacity) with attention to breath. This practice can be challenging, as we must sit with ourselves in silence and stillness.
What are the benefits of the style?
Yin yoga offers increased mobility, circulation, freedom from tightness and improved clarity. We work along meridians in the body (energetic networks) based on Chinese Medicine that we believe can impact our overall quality of life. The time spent turning attention inward (Svadhyaya, or self-study) can create steadiness in the mind.
