Last week, I found myself fidgeting during Yin Yoga.
You know the kind of fidgeting I mean—twitchy foot, tapping fingers, little head movements side to side. It wasn’t a big deal, but it was enough to catch my attention. And it made me smile… because I see it all the time when I teach.
It’s often a sign of the same thing: our minds haven’t landed yet.
The thoughts are still swirling. We’re in our heads, not quite in our bodies.
And in that moment, I realised I needed to take my own advice—the exact words I say to students so often.
Pause. Soften. Come back to the breath.
So I did.
I followed the inhale as it entered.
The exhale as it left.
I kept returning to that rhythm. That wave. That anchor.
And then—something shifted.
The thoughts softened. The fidgeting slowed. The stillness arrived.
Not all at once, but little by little. Breath by breath.
And once my mind calmed, my body followed.
Why is Stillness So Hard?
Stillness can feel surprisingly challenging, especially for those of us who are drawn to more dynamic practices—Hot Yoga, Vinyasa Flow. I’ve had so many yogis tell me they find Yin Yoga more difficult than the fiery styles. And honestly? I get it.
Yin Yoga demands a different kind of strength.
A quieter kind.
A softer kind.
A deep, inner strength that comes not from doing more—but from doing less. From leaning into space and stillness rather than rushing to fill it.
Yin Yoga Isn’t a Luxury—It’s Essential
If I’m being really honest, I don’t always prioritise Yin Yoga either.
Like many of us go-go-go types, I often treat it like a bonus. Something “extra.” Something I’ll get to when I have time.
But here’s the truth: every single time I show up for Yin, my body, mind, and nervous system thank me.
It’s where the integration happens.
It’s where the healing happens.
It’s where I come back to myself.
A Gentle Challenge
So here’s my invitation—to myself, and to you too:
Let’s weave more Yin Yoga into our weeks.
Not just for our hamstrings or hips (although it’s brilliant for that too),
but for our hearts. Our minds. Our energy.
Let’s get out of our heads and back into our bodies.
Let’s soften the edges.
Let’s make space for stillness.
See you on the mat?
