I caught up with some of the school parents on the weekend (for an 80s themed fundraiser! 🪩) and got a question that caught me off guard from one of the dads:
“Are guys welcome at Kula?”
It surprised me because we’ve never focused on gender—our doors have always been open to everyone. But it made me pause… maybe we haven’t made that clear enough.
Scrolling through our Instagram, it’s definitely very female-focused. Most of our in-studio shots feature our teaching team—which, right now, happens to be mostly women.
It’s true that Kula is proudly a female-owned and led yoga studio, and yes, most of our teachers are women (though we’d love to welcome more male teachers!). And if you walk into our Hawthorn or Hampton studios, you’ll notice a lot of our clients are women too.
But the guys are there—I promise!
And we love the energy and balance they bring to our community. We’d love to see even more of it.
So, with that in mind, I asked my husband what he thought. He’s been roped into Kula photoshoots over the years (see featured image!) and has been around since day one… although he’s not exactly a consistent yogi!
He said that yes, he always feels welcome—but also a little nervous and intimidated.
Ahhh… now we’re getting somewhere.
He admitted that stepping into a yoga class can feel daunting—especially when you assume you’ll be the least flexible person in the room. And let’s be honest, most guys don’t bother stretching at the best of times!
But here’s the thing… nobody starts yoga because they’re already super flexible and know exactly what they’re doing. We start because we need it—whether it’s to move better, feel better, recover from workouts, prevent injuries, or just de-stress.
So, for the record, let me make this crystal clear for all of our community:
✅ Yes, guys are absolutely welcome.
✅ Yes, there are already men in our community.
✅ Yes, we’d love to see more of them!
Whether yoga becomes your main movement practice or something that supports your other training, we’ve got you.
No pressure to be bendy, no need to know what you’re doing—just show up, breathe, move, and see how good it feels.
Curious? Come give it a go.
See you on the mat,
Kacey x
P.S. If you’re reading this thinking, “My husband / friend / brother / colleague should try yoga” — bring them along!
