If you’re a mum trying to juggle school drop-offs, work, and your own sanity, you’re not alone. As a yoga teacher and studio owner, I should have it all together, right?
But let me tell you—on one Tuesday morning, a full-scale grade 2 meltdown left me flustered, emotional, and questioning everything. And it reminded me exactly why yoga for stressed mums is more than a luxury—it’s a necessity.
When Drop-Off Doesn’t Go to Plan
You’d think by the time your kid hits grade 2, the school drop-off tears and meltdowns would be a thing of the past. Right?
Apparently not. Sigh.
There I was, just a week into Term 1, standing outside the classroom with my 7-year-old son, Kai, in full meltdown mode.
No warning signs, no obvious triggers—he’s in a class with great friends, a lovely teacher, and everything should’ve been smooth sailing. But for some reason that morning, it wasn’t.
I tried everything. The soft, quiet cuddles and gentle encouragement to get him inside. The tough-love, “You’re a big grade 2 now, you’ve got this!” speech. But nothing worked.
The clock was ticking, my stress was rising, and (because kids have that sixth sense for these things) Kai dug his heels in even more.
Eventually, his lovely teacher, the principal, and the school’s therapy dog all came to the rescue (bless them). I left the school gate with a lump in my throat and a heavy case of mama guilt.
The Power of Breathwork and Movement
But you know what I did next?
I gave myself a little pep talk—because let’s be real, no one’s harder on themselves than a stressed-out parent—and reminded myself that Kai was safe and supported.
Then, I did what I always tell others to do: I turned to my practice. I practised what I preach.
On the drive to our Hampton studio, I started pranayama (breathwork). I did a few rounds of physiological sighs: two inhales through the nose, followed by a slow exhale through the mouth.
Within minutes, I felt my nervous system begin to settle.
When I arrived, I parked the car and literally shook it off—a simple practice called Virata that helps release nervous energy. Start by shaking your hands, then let the movement travel up your arms, through your legs, and your whole body. Yes, you might look a little wild doing this in a car park, but trust me—it works.
Why Yoga Is My Self-Care Lifeline
Just 10 minutes after that chaotic drop-off, I walked into the studio calm, centred, and genuinely smiling.
It was such a powerful reminder of how effective our tools really are.
